Lot Essay

Suiseki was born in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture and studied under Amano Hoko in Kyoto and Watanabe Shoka in Tokyo. Paintings of tigers, his most popular subject, were awarded the gold prize at the Paris Exposition in 1900 and at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.
