A Lacquer and Wood Picnic Set (Sage Jubako)
Meiji period (19th century)
The exterior carrying case with open sides and undecorated to show the natural wood grain, the edges decorated with foliate scroll in gold lacquer and the top fitted with a loop handle, the hinged front opening to reveal five covered boxes of various sizes and three sweet trays lacquered red, black, olive green or left undecorated, the trays with bird and flower designs in gold hiramaki-e
