Two Four-Tier Stacking Lacquer Boxes (Jubako)
Meiji period (19th century)
The first of square section and decorated in gold, silver, brown and red hiramaki-e and takamaki-e and gold embellishments on a nashiji ground with gourds and vines, the underside of the cover with butterflies; edges fundame and interiors nashiji; the second cylindrical and designed on each tier with plum blossoms, scrolling peonies, cherry blossoms or lattice work, the cover with butterflies around a cherry floret banded by wisteria, the box lacquered in gold hiramaki-e and nashiji on a black ground
