Lot Essay

John Sproson worked independently in Philadelphia from 1783-1786 before moving to New York, where he worked independently from 1789-1798. Around 1798, Sproson formed a brief partnership with Charles Marsh. Marsh had his own shop in New York from 1797-1811 before relocating to Cincinnati, where he worked from 1812 until his death in 1819.

A set of related chairs stamped Sproson were sold Christie's New York, October 12, 2001, lot 74.
