Manuscript on polished cream paper, 356ff. each with 14ll. of elegant black naskh and red nasta'liq Persian interlinear translation, gold illuminated marginal juz' markers and headers, black nasta'liq Persian marginal commentary, illuminated bifolium in blue, gold, pink and green with profuse floral ornament, preceded by illuminated bifolium with du'a and the titles of the suwar in red on gold around the borders, colophon with date Shawwal 1331, name of scribe 'Ali Naqi al-Shirazi, and patron Mirza Muhammad Taqi Khan Mu'ayyid al-Mulk, lacquer binding with gold rosebush containing birds surrounded by green vines, the whole within border of black, red and gold, the black doublures with naturalistically rendered irises in gold, with ornate panels containing inscriptions in minute nasta'liq, excellent condition

Lot Essay

The name of the scribe 'Ali Naqi al-Shirazi appears in the colophon. He mentions that he was ordered to copy the interlinear translations and the marginal commentaries. The scribe of the main text is not given.

'Ali Naqi Shirazi was the son of Yusif mudhahhib-bashi Shirazi and is mentioned as one of most celebrated scribes of his time. His recorded work is dated between 1320-39/1902-21. (M. Bayani, ahval va asar-e khosh-nevisan, vol. II, Tehran, 1346 sh., pp. 491-2) and Sotheby's April, 1985, lot 117.
