Poetry, Persian manuscript on paper, 326ff. with 21ll. of black nasta'liq arranged in four gold-outlined columns, the title of each of the six sections in Persian in Eastern kufic on illuminated panels, minor titles in gold on red-hatched panels within text, final folio with colophon signed by the scribe Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahim ibn Muhammad ibn Siraj al-Din and dated mid-Safar 873, later black morocco binding with gold lacquer medallions and spandrels

Lot Essay

This is a fine Timurid copy of the famous Mathnawi. Preceding each chapter a later owner has appended a short commentary in Arabic or Persian in shikasteh. These notes and the acompanying gold floral illumination are probably of 19th century date.
