Paintings from Weeks' late-1870s sojourn through Spain, during which he visited and painted the Mosque of Cordova, are comparatively rare. In this painting Weeks demonstrates remarkable adeptness in the loosely-rendered effects of the weathered wall and arch, through which the eye is drawn by the crisply suggestive lighting of the door and the trees beyond.
