Lot Essay

Paintings from Weeks' late-1870s sojourn through Spain, during which he visited and painted the Mosque of Cordova, are comparatively rare. In this painting Weeks demonstrates remarkable adeptness in the loosely-rendered effects of the weathered wall and arch, through which the eye is drawn by the crisply suggestive lighting of the door and the trees beyond.

We wish to thank Dr. Ellen K. Morris for preparing this catalogue entry. This painting will be included in the catalogue raisonné under preparation by Dr. Morris.
