This may have been the property of a priest. A similar staff is carried by a male figure on a painted funerary plaque, one of the so-called 'Boccanera plaques' from Caere, 550-530 B.C., now in the British Museum. The ram, a favourite sacrificial animal, is often associated with Hermes, patron deity of shepherds, travellers and tradesmen. The kerykeion, carried by Hermes, frequently has rams' head terminals.
