Lot Essay

The sitter in the present work, Richard Smart, was a director of Arthur Tooth & Sons, Matthew Smith's dealer's since 1929. It was Smart who, according to Alice Keene, persuaded Smith to return to England from France in 1940. This painting was executed at Clarendon Road, where Smith and Mary Keene (Alice's mother) lived together.
