Lot Essay

A contemporary, and possibly studio, version of the painting by Jan II in a private collection, Belgium, recorded by Klaus Ertz in his 1984 catalogue raisonné of the artist's works (Freren, 1984, pp. 493-4, pl. 70) as painted in collaboration with Lucas van Uden and datable to 1630-40. As noted by Ertz, the motifs of the animals are taken from protoypes by Jan I, who in turn adapted them from compositions by Snyders in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.
