MacTaggart visited France in 1922, arriving in Cannes with his mother just before New Year. The present view is one of several he painted of the promenade, he was fascinated by the large tent in which an orchestra played as people strolled by, enjoying the music and the open air at the same time. The trip resulted in a total of some thirty works which he showed, to small acclaim, in the curch haallofo St Andres's Scottish church, Cannes.
