Lot Essay

The handle on the present cup appears to be a combination of shapes B and D and described by Rosalind Savill in her catalogue of Sèvres porceLain at the Wallace Collection. See R. Savill, The Wallace Collection, Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, vol. II, p. 501.

For a cup and saucer of the same date but of variant form, similarly painted by Fontaine but en grisaille instead of in color, see anonymous sale, Christie's, New York, Oct 22, 2003 - Oct 23, 2003, lot 280.
