Lot Essay

A pair of candlesticks of related model were delivered in 1778 by the maître-doreur Pré Germain for the comte d'Artois' bedroom at the château de Bagatelle, where they were described as deux paires de petits flambeaux à carquois en triepied trés richement cisléges et dorés d'or mat. A closely related pair of flambeaux but with a raised central shaft and laurel-cast domed socle was sold from the collection of M. Maurice Lange, Paris, Galerie Jean Charpentier, 24-5 May 1935, lot 1. A virtually identical pair of candlesticks to those offered here was sold from the Alexander Collection, Christie's New York, 30 April 1999, lot 10.
