The moulded frame carved to the cresting of each curved back with a pair of roses and foliage, terminating in scroll-carved armrests, the moulded apron with a central tablet carved with ribbon tied flowers, on square tapering stop-fluted legs with flower carved headers, stamped Pillot, upholstered in close-nailed striped blue horsehair fabric

Lot Essay

The little known menuisier Pillot was based in Nimes. He advertised his business as '...vend toutes sortes de meubles, fauteuils ' l'anglaise en medaillon, ...lits ' la turque, ottomane, sofa...' Nimes, pris le Marchi, no. 106...' (see P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Francaise du XVIIIe Siecle Francaise, Paris, 1998, page 654). He specialised in the distinctive form of fluted legs seen on this duchesse
