Lot Essay
The boar in this popular model is based on Pietrò Tacca's celebrated copy of the Antique sculpture adorning the fountain in the Mercata Nuovo, Florence, popularised during the 17th century by bronze reproductions generally attributed to Francesco Susini (d. 1646).
An identical pair of chenets, cast entirely in gilt-bronze, is conserved in the Dauphin's bedchamber at Versailles (illustrated G. Van der Kemp, Versailles, London, 1978, p. 39). Later versions, cast by Pitoin and supplied for Madame du Barry at Louveciennes, are now in the Louvre (illustrated C. Dreyfus, Catalogue sommaire du Mobilier du XVII Siècle et du XVIII Siècle, Paris, 1922, pl. LVI).
Another 19th century pair of these models, from the Elisabeth Parke Firestone Collection, was sold Christie's New York, 22-23 March 1991, lot 856 ($7,700).
