Provenance

The two largest fragments in this group were formerly in The Bernheimer Family Collection of Carpets, Sold Christie's, King Street, 14 February 1996, lots 117 and 164.

Lot Essay

These are fragments from the "vase" group of carpets clearly identified and exhibited by May Beattie in 1976 (Carpets of Central Persia, exhibition catalogue, Sheffield, 1976. This group served as the main inspiration for the eighteenth and early nineteenth century carpets of North West Persia which are so well represented in this collection.
