Lot Essay

It is difficult to look at the works of Penleigh Boyd and not be struck by their similarities to those of Arthur Streeton, in particular the similar palate and paint application. Both artists shared short dabs of paint and suggestions of shapes and figures and used the most vibrant and realistic shades of blue. "As did Streeton "Penleigh revealed a sensitivity to nature. In his best paintings he was precocious, mounting successful exhibitions after his graduation from the National Gallery School." (A Sayers, Australian Art, Melbourne, 2001, p.108). We are only left to wonder what his artistic legacy might have been had he not been killed so tragically at the age of thirty-three in a car accident.
