Lot Essay

Previously sold in these Rooms, 30 October 2001, lot 833. A very similar vase was also sold in these Rooms, 29 September 1992, lot 555.
The present Yongzheng period vase indicates a revival of shape and glaze of earlier periods. The form itself is from taken from a bronze of the Western Han dynasty, such as the example excavated from the tomb of the King of Nanyue, illustrated in Zhongguo Wenwu Jinghua Dacidian, Qingtongjuan (bronzes), Shanghai Cishu chubanshe, 1995, p. 301, no. 1081; whilst the glaze is simulating the famous crackled Ge glaze of the Song period.
