A RARE 'LANDSCAPE' KESI HANDSCROLL
MING DYNASTY, 16TH/17TH CENTURY

The scroll opening with a kesi panel woven to depict a full-faced dragon straddling a 'flaming' pearl, accompanied by two smaller dragons in similar pursuit amidst ruyi clouds, the details picked out in shades of orange, blue and gold silk threads against an olive-green ground; followed by a second kesi panel portraying a scene of boats sailing on a river, detailed with mountains and pavilions, all woven in threads of blue, green, and orange tones against a mustard-yellow ground, outlines of the mountains picked out in couched gold threads, ending with four seals of two collectors (minor wear)

Lot Essay

The present handscroll according to the sealmarks once were in the possession of two well-known collectors. The first is Wu Puxin, whose studio name is recognised by the oval seal bearing the three characters, Sixue Zhai. The second collector is Li Jingyu (1857 - ?), identified by the sealmark which reads: Hefei Lishi Wangyuncao Tang Zhencang, 'From the precious collection of Mr Li of Heifei (Anhui province), whose hall name is Wangyuncao Tang'.
