Lot Essay

The arms are those of Smythe, Viscount of Strangford; see D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, vol. II, London, 2003, p. 707. This service was made for Percy Clinton Sydney Smith (1780-1855), 6th Viscount, who was the first British Ambassador to the court of Dom João in Rio de Janeiro between 1807 and 1814. A plate from this service is illustrated by E. F. Brancante, O Brasil e a Louça da India, Sao Paulo, 1950, plate XXIV, p. 277, together with a portrait of Percy, Viscount Strangford on p. 275. A dish of very similar shape to the present lot, also from this service and formerly in the collection of Col. E. F. Brancante, is illustrated by J. R. Teixeira Leite, As Companhias das Indias e a Porcelana Chinesa de Encomenda, Sao Paulo, 1986, fig. 52, p. 131.
