Lot Essay
Traditionally known as 'pseudo-tobacco-leaf' although the pattern does not actually depict tobacco leaves, this service was probably made for the Portuguese market, and may well have been a precursor to the true 'tobacco-leaf' wares, which are normally dated a decade or so later. See M. Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, London, 1962, p. 186, cat. no. 158 for a plate from this service; and Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol. II, p. 541, no. 556 for a sauce-tureen stand from the Mottahedeh Collection.
