Lot Essay

Fry produced many flower paintings, but towards the end of the First World War, after selling all his canvases of this type in an exhibition, he told his daughter, 'I shall never paint flowers again. It is dangerous to try to repeat anything that has been a success because you then get stuck in one style'.
