Lot Essay

The Arts Council held a memorial exhibition of the works of Dame Ethel Walker at the Tate in 1952. In the exhibition catalogue, T. W. Earp comments that her flowerpieces, 'cascading in the brilliance of their tints, convey, in their lyricism and eager directness of execution, the enthusiasm of the painter's response to her subject. With no stiffness of arrangement, she luxuriated in nature's colourful abundance' (see Exhibition catalogue, Memorial Exhibition of the works of Dame Ethel Walker, London, Arts Council, Tate Gallery, 1952, p. 4).
