Lot Essay

According to Jenny So, in Eastern Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, New York 1995, p.399, the chunyu usually described as bells were used as military drums to signal troups during battles. However, Ma Chengyuan points out in Ancient Chinese Bronzes, Oxford 1986, p.205, that the chenyu of Geng Wu in the collection of the Shanghai Museum is inscribed "To be treasured and played eternally by my sons and grandsons" and therefore concludes that "(...) chenyu was not necessarily a musical instrument used by the army." A similar piece is illustrated in The Third Kubosou Collection, Eguchi Jiro Collection, Kubosou Memorial Museum of Art, Izumi 2001, p.73, pl.132
