A PRECLASSIC MAYAN STONE DEITY'S HEAD
Izapa, Late Preclassic, ca. 300-100 B.C.
Possibly created as a headdress element, boldly carved with the highly stylized features of Chac with prototypical thick scrolled brows, sunken eyes, high cheekbones and pointed snout within a scalloped frame, with extensive remains of cinnabar; in variegated green stone, pierced twice at the top of the head.
Height 5 7/8 in. (14 cm.)
