WHITMAN, Sarah Helen (1803-1878). Hours of Life and Other Poems, Providence [U.S.]: George H. Whitney, 1853. 8° (169 x 108mm). Original brown cloth, black half morocco case. Provenance: purchased from James F. Drake, New York, 6 November 1938, $35 -- Halsted B. Vander Poel. FIRST EDITION. A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Whitman was at one time the fiancée of Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote his second poem entitled 'To Helen' about her. While this, her first collection of poems, was published at a late date, she had already been included in Griswold's Female Poets Of America (Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, 1849).
READE, Charles (1814-1884), White Lies: a Story. London: Trübner, 1857. 3 volumes. 8° (196 x 120mm). (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary green cloth, spines gilt, green half morocco case. Provenance: Halsted B. Vander Poel. FIRST EDITION. White Lies, one of Reade's early works, appeared as a serial story in the London Journal in 1856-57. Reade's own dramatisation was performed at the Queen's Theatre, 24 October 1867, under the name Double Marriage. Later editions of the novel, from 1868 on, had as their title Double Marriage: or White Lies. Reade, a fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford and a barrister, first began to write, with some success, as a dramatist. He completed his first novel in 1852, and from then on continued to work in both media. His greatest novel The Cloister and the Hearth was published in 1861.
