CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria (1650-1718). Memorie istoriogeografiche della Morea. Venice: Giuseppe Maria Ruinetti, 1687.
2° (395 x 274mm). Letterpress collation: \Kp\k2 A-HH2, occasional irregular pagination and signatures, stamped in or written in MS, 5 slightly smaller leaves inserted, two containing a half-page view. 69 engravings as follows: engraved title with dedication to Pietro Foscarini, engraved folding map, 20 double-page plates on guards, 23 half-page engravings on text leaves (two on inserted leaves), 24 half-page engravings printed on 12 leaves, one half-page engraving printed within an engraved border on a double-page. (Small light stain on one plate, light spotting on last text leaf.) Contemporary vellum over thin pasteboards, title lettered on spine, sprinkled edges. Provenance: early bequest inscription on title: 'Ex legato D. Petri Pauli Bona' -- ink-stamp on title effaced.
SECOND EDITION, augmented with additional text and plates to depict the new conquests by the Venetians, of a 'basic source work on the Peloponessus' (Blackmer). THE PRESENT COPY IS THE MOST FULLY ILLUSTRATED OF ANY OFFERED AT AUCTION IN OVER A DECADE, and contains the rare leaf of two half-page views of Megara and Negroponte, lacking in both the Blackmer and Atabey copies. As usual with Coronelli books, no two copies of this work appear to be identical, due to Coronelli re-using sheets and engravings from the 1686 edition, and the present copy is no exception. It contains all the views called for in the printed plate list, with two present as first-edition sheets (Modone in ottavo; Porto di Cerigo). In addition, it has 3 extra double-page engravings [Passava; the Turkish standard; a second, variant Napoli di Romania] and 5 half-page engravings [Corfu; Misitra; Fort. di Cerigo; Negroponte and Megara]. These are also found in the Blackmer and Atabey copies, with the exception of the duplicate Napoli plate, the Turkish standard plate, and the Negroponte/Megara plates. Cf. Blackmer 408; Atabey 288.
