Lot Essay

Louise, daughter of Landgrave George William of Hesse-Darmstadt married Landgrave Louis X of Hesse-Darmstadt, later Grand-Duke Louis I, in 1777. Louise and her sister Charlotte were educated at the Austrian Court and were close friends of Queen Marie-Antoinette of France. Among the goods seized from Marie-Antoinette at the Conciergerie were two miniatures depicting Louise and Charlotte of Hesse-Darmstadt.
For another miniature of the sitter by the Chevalier de Chateaubourg, dated 1795, see G. Biermann and Brinkmann, Die Miniaturensammlung Seiner Königlichen Hoheit des Grossherzogs Ernst Ludwig von Hessen und bei Rhein, Leipzig, 1917, illustrated pl. 55, no. 183.
