Specialist note

Charles Frederick, Grand-Duke of Baden 1811-1818, had to marry Emperor Napoléon's step-daughter, Stéphanie de Beauharnais in 1806. As Charles had more interest in young men in uniform than in his wife, the mariage was not particularly happy, furthermore because Charles's mother despised her 'parvenue' daughter-in-law profoundly.
