Lot Essay

The pose of this torso suggests that this may be a variation of the so-called Munich "Oil-pourer," a 4th century B.C. work by a follower of Polykleitos depicting an athlete pouring oil from an alabastron held in his raised right hand into his lowered left hand. For the type see figs. 230 and 231 in Beck, Bol and Bückling, Polyklet, Der Bildhauer der griechischen Klassik.
