A ROMAN MARBLE FEMALE FIGURE
CIRCA 1ST CENTURY A.D.
Depicting a private citizen in the guise of a goddess, perhaps Venus or Proserpina, standing with her weight on her right leg, the left bent at the knee, wearing pointed shoes, a long chiton, and a heavy himation pulled up over the back of her head as a veil, wrapped around her body with a diagonal roll of fabric across the left shoulder, and falling in long zigzag folds over her left arm, holding a pomegranate in her left hand, an offering between the index finger and thumb of her right hand, with center-parted wavy hair bound in a fillet, long tendrils falling on to each shoulder, and a single curled lock painted in black before her left ear, with modelled brows and lidded unarticulated eyes, her head turned to her right, preserving additional black for the brows and eyes, and red pigment along the integral rectangular plinth
