PUCCINI, Giacomo. Autograph music manuscript signed, a draft in short score of the opening 47 bars of Act IV of La Bohème, signed and dated at head by the composer 'Pescia 20 7mbre [18]95 Quadro [Scene] 4o La Bohème di G. Puccini', numerous cancellations and emendations, in particular to vocal parts, three systems of four staves on two pages, folio (330 x 241mm), (irregular browning, some wear to upper margin, tears affecting upper half, old tape repairs).
A vivid and highly worked draft for a passage of Act IV: Rodolfo and Marcello are once more at work in the garret, but their thoughts stray to their sweethearts -- 'Ah nun tu piu non torni'. The draft appears to represent a fairly early stage of composition, with no indications of orchestration at this stage, and much work on the detail of the vocal lines. There are markings from bar 28 to indicate that the bars hitherto marked in 3/8 time should be regrouped in threes, in 9/8 time. La Bohème was completed on 10 December 1895, and first performed on 1 February 1896.
