Harebells

The son of sculptor Richard Cockle Lucas, Alfred Durer Lucas exhibited his delicate flower paintings at the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institution. These are predominantly naturalistic, with details such as nests and butterflies, though Lucas did paint some formal arrangements set in classical alcoves.

Lucas executed few figurative subjects but it is interesting to note some sketches of James Leathart, the major Pre-Raphaelite patron and Newcastle industrialist, and his children in the artist's Witt files.
