Lot Essay

James Egan (1849-c.1920) was a glass-painter for Morris and Co. in the 1870s and 1880s and this panel may have been produced while he was in the Morris and Co. workshops. The panel was displayed in the Morris and Co. showrooms at 17 George Street, Hanover Square, London from about 1919. It appears in a watercolour by Dulcy Wornum dated 1919 which was featured in the Morris and Co. brochure of c.1919-20.
The panel was purchased by the vendor's late father in the late 1920s and was described by the Managing Director H.C. Marillier as depicting William Morris' daughters Jenny and May.

We are grateful to Peter Cormack of the William Morris Gallery, London for his expertise relating to this lot.
