Lot Essay

A version of this drawing is reproduced on the back of the dust jacket of The Second Burst (published 1952), the second volume of the artist's autobiography.

The drawing is inscribed to the art historian Dr Thomas Bodkin (1887-1961). The author of Four Irish Landscape Painters (published 1920), Bodkin went on to become Director of the National Gallery of Ireland (1927-1935) and Director of the Barber Institute, Birmingham.
