Lot Essay

These wall-lights are inspired by a model of André-Charles Boulle, which is trailed with husks rather than berried foliage, including the pair in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu (DF.195/1). This basic model can be seen in Jean-François de Troy's celebrated picture, La Lecture de Molière, sold by the Marquess of Cholmondeley, Christie's London, Works of Art from Houghton, 8 December 1994, lot 147.
