a typed and hand illustrated manuscript, bound in green kid, of a journey from America and vacation in Great Britain and Europe; the authors having bought two bears as gifts for their two children, the two bears tell the story. Seventy-eight pages with thirty-three illustrations, most coloured (eight not including bears)

Persons Represented - Bub, a brown Teddy Bear, Snowball or Baby, a white teddy bear, Mother and Father are the owners of the two bears, Gramma and Granpa are the parents of owners of the two bears, Uncle Pad is the brother of owners of teddy bears and Miss Poogan a fairy friend.

Some extracts and details The journey starts on August 3rd. 1907, a letter written to Father and Mother from Snowball from The Lake Shore Limited enroute from Chicago to New York.
Monday, August 5th. a letter/poem written to Father and Mother from the Waldorf-Astoria New York, signed Bubby and Snowball.
August 6th enroute between New York and Atlantic City stay at Hotel Brighton (page 8 illustration of Bubby and Snowball)
Page 11. On Board R.M.S. Baltic, Friday, August 9th., various poems about the journey, until they dock at Liverpool Docks on the 16/17th August.
Monday, August 19th Grosvenor Hotel Chester, The Royal Oak Hotel Bettwys-Y-Coed, August 22nd a letter from Llandudno, Friday, August 23rd a poem about the Irish sea as the cross to Dublin.
Monday, 2nd September travels through Somerset, Glastonbury and North Devon. 4th September Exeter and 5th September stay at the Red Lion Hotel Salisbury (illustration of the two bears with the Red Lion sign).
Sunday, 8th September Ventnor, Isle of Wight and ate lobster at 'Cass's Crab and Lobster Hotel (illustration of the bears with hotel sign). 12th September Winchester and then onto London, staying at 'fine lodgings'. September 14th, dinner at the Carleton, over the next few days visiting Hampton Court, London Zoo (illustration of bears with giraffee), Old London Brigde, Bow Lane and September 21st a visit to Liberty's and Uncle goes to the matinee of 'Mrs. Wiggs'.
Friday, October 4th Paris. (illustration of two very bored bears at the Versailles Museum' and (illustration of it raining cats and dogs on the two bears) Paris October 18th.
Tuesday 22nd October, Oberhofen in the Alps, Thursday 31st October writes from aboard ship on their return journey.

Lot Essay

Sadly, there is no record of the authors of this wonderful journal, or of the children who received it. The charm of the illustrations, the letters and poems are a fascinating insight into life at this time, and to have such an early record of 'Teddy Bears' is very unusual.
