Lot Essay

The present drawing depicts the Golden Drawing-room in the Winter Palace before it was destroyed by fire in 1837. The room was subsequently redesigned and is now known as the Malachite Room.
A preparatory pencil drawing of Chernetsov's watercolour can be found in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (see V. B. Semenov, Malakhit, Sverdlovsk, 1987, p. 38, fig. 13).
