King Charles III and Queen Amelia of Spain,
a fan, the leaf painted with the crowned King on a dais beside his Queen, attented by a cleric, musicians, courtiers, their children and two guards, with a monument inscribed Vive Le Roy, Vive la Reine, the reserves painted with a trompe l'oeil of lace, the verso painted with a shield inscribed viva Carolus III, a ship and Minerva, the mother of pearl sticks carved, pierced and painted with a parrot and other birds, trophies of love and music - 11in. (29cm.), French for the Spanish market, 1759 (repairs to guardsticks, leaf worn)

Lot Essay

King Charles III acceded to the Spanish throne in 1759.
A fan painted with Charles III and Queen Amelia entering Madrid in a mule-drawn carriage in 1759 was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 4 December 2001, lot62; and a fan commemorating the birth of their son the Infante Philip, Duke of Calabria in 1747 in the Palace of Portici, nr. Naples, was sold at Christie's South Kensington 19 September 2000, lot 29.
