A collection of 23 costume and set designs and an illustration by Orson Welles, each a watercolour on paper, 17 for Roland Petit's ballet The Lady In Ice, 1953, largest -- 15¼x20½ in. (38.7x52cm.), two framed; a set design for a proposed film version of Julius Ceaser, circa 1950 -- 10¾x14in. (27.8x35.6cm.); and Bravadeurs, a watercolour pen and ink book illustration circa 1956 -- 6x7½in. (15.2x19cm.) (22)

Lot Essay

In 1956 Welles designed a hand-illustrated, hand-written book for his youngest daughter Rebecca, entitled Les Bravades. The book gave an account of an annual festival in St. Tropez to commemorate the town's patron saint. One of the sketches in this lot appears to have been devised for this book.
