BROWNE, Thomas (1605-1682). Religio Medici. [London]: Andrew Crooke, 1642.
8o (136 x 83 mm). Collation: π1 A-K8. (Upper inner corner of title renewed, rusthole on A8 with loss of a few letters, closely trimmed with a few catchwords clipped, tiny repaired wormtrack in last gathering affecting a few letters, a bit browned.) Modern brown morocco, edges gilt, by C. Walters; quarter morocco slipcase.
FIRST EDITION. "Browne's Religio Medici describes the religion and philosophy of a tolerant, humorous and latitudinarian mind" (DSB). Browne, a doctor by profession, had an active interest in a wide range of subjects, from archeology and philosophy to physics and biology. Religio Medici, his first published work, was a philosophical tract as much as a religious one, a Platonist's contemplation on the world. Its publication met mixed reactions; in Paris it was published by a Roman Catholic; in Rome it was listed on the Index Expurgatorius. The two anonymous 1642 editions were published without the author's permission. See Garrison-Morton 6612.90; Grolier Club English Literature, 26; Keynes 1; NLM/Krivatsy 1840; Norman 357 (reversing the first and second editions); PMM 131; Wellcome II, p.252; Wing B-5166.
