Lot Essay

This bay colt was bred by Lord Eglinton in 1840 by Bay Middleton out of Rectitude by Lottery. At two years old he won his first race when favorite for the Ham Stakes at Goodwood and then won at Doncaster with 2/1 on. In 1843 he began by running unplaced in the Derby but later won two races in the year and also ran unplaced in the St. Leger. At four years old he was in two races at Goodwood including one worth £2,700 in which he beat the 1843 Derby winner Cotherstone due to the latter breaking down. A single win at Lord Elginton's private meeting at Eglinton Park in 1845 ended his career.
