Lot Essay

John Frederick Herring was one of seven surviving children of John Frederick Herring Senior (1795-1865). J.F. Herring Junior and two of his brothers Charles and Benjamin were all sporting artists like their father. Despite the similarity of subject-matter with the work of his father, their styles are quite distinct. J.F. Herring Junior tended to work in a more laboured fashion with particular detail and attention to the foreground grass, straw or foliage, and he gave his animals a very solid appearance. He worked both in oil and watercolour but his oils are of particular interest.
