Lot Essay

Variants of this popular composition are known. It is probable that the present picture is the work of a Flemish artist working for the French Court; for a similar composition see that by Marten de Vos, in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (see A. Zweite, Marten de Vos als Maler, Berlin, 1980, p. 283, no. 47, and pl. 56).
