JOHN LENNON DRAWING AND INSCRIPTION TO MIKE LOVE OF THE BEACH BOYS
CIRCA 1968
An original ink drawing by John Lennon on cream colored paper depicting a naked self-portrait in the center of a circle with an inscription around the inside edge reading "with love to dear mike love from dear john lennon goodbye and see you round the world or somewhere if not england or the disunited states." The verso has an inscription at top in blue ink reading (sic) "Drawn by John Lennon (Beatles) For Mike Love (Beach Boys) In India 1968? (Marahishi)." Lennon and the Beatles flew to India in 1968 where they joined the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in his meditation center. Singer/songwriter Donovan wrote a fond memory of The Beatles that reads in part, "It was 1968 in India, we were all gathered together in the Maharishi's bungalow, four Beatles, one Beach Boy, Mia Farrow and me. Maharishi was on the floor sitting cross-legged, but the rest of us were all still standing around as we'd just arrived. Anyway there was a kind of embarrassed hush in the room and John Lennon [always the funny one] decided to break the silence so he walked up to the Maharishi, patted him on the head and quietly said, There's a good guru."
