GEORGE HARRISON ORIGINAL ARTWORK FOR DARK HORSE
1974
The original painting, matted and framed, of the front cover of George Harrison's album Dark Horse, which was painted by Tom Wilkes. On the finished album an old school photo that Harrison appears in with a blue face is inserted into the painting. Dark Horse's imagery was a play on the iconic cover of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, though Harrison's album art is steeped in symbols of the Hare Krishna tradition. Also present is a finished version of the gatefold album cover showing Harrison sitting on a bench. A bad case of laryngitis plagued Harrison's vocals on the album and subsequent tour, and the harsh critical reaction to both seemed to hasten Harrison's retreat from the public eye, from which he would only sporadically emerge afterwards.
