Lot Essay

The proportions of these fantastic chandeliers, carved with exotic birds, pagoda-like drip-pans and bells suggest that these were once created for the garden gallery or tea room of some fashionable princely residence. One such room was the Chinesische Kabinett at Schloss Fasanerie near Fulda, while drawings, dated 1823, of the wall and ceiling decoration of the speisegalerie at the nearby Residenzpalais in Kassel show similar decorative schemes with pierced pagodas and exotic birds, which might also have been lit by such chandeliers.
