Adam brought to England the Italian artist Michaelangelo Pergolesi, who helped introduce from 1760 this dainty 'antique' ornament, and worked alongside the artist Giovanni Battista Cipriani, R.A. (d.1785). Pergolesi, in his Designs for Various Ornaments, published between 1777 and 1801, recorded that he had been assisted by other artists such as Angelica Kauffman, Cipriani, Antonio Zucchi etc.; and he dedicated No. 12 of the first volume 'To the Memory of the Late Most High and Puissant Prince, Hugh Percy, Duke of Northumberland'. In addition Pergolesi's, Original Designs in the Etruscan and Grotesque Style, were issued posthumously in 1814. Amongst the leading firms of japanners and papier-maché manufacturers that helped popularise this fashion was Henry Clay (d.1812), who was established in Birmingham in 1772 before transferring his business to King Street, Covent Garden, London in the 1780s.
