Lot Essay

These 'sgabelli' are of exceptionally elaborate design and, unsually, have a distinguished provenance stretching back until at least the end of the 19th century. In their overall design, they relate to the antiquarian purchases made by the Duke of Norfolk for Arundel Castle, Sussex, carried out under the advice of Davis of Pall Mall. A closely related pair of 'sgabelli' remain on the Stone staircase at Arundel. A further closely related hall chair is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, which was published in F. Schottmüller, Wohnungskultur und Möbel der Italienischen Renaissance, Stuttgart, 1921, p.171, fig.384, whilst other closely related 'sgabelli' are published in A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Fasto Romano, Rome, 1991, fig. XXIX.
