Lot Essay

The prototype exists in several versions. The late Dr. Stephen Pepper (Guido Reni, 1984, p. 304, no. C6) lists five versions: in the Hermitage, the Uffizi, the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, the Gemäldegalerie, Stuttgart, and the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Rome. Dr. Pepper believed that none of these versions is by Reni, and suggested that the priginal may instead have been by one of Reni's pupils, possibly Elisabeth Sirani.
